‘OTDR 2.0’ – Updated Software for VIAVI SmartOTDR & T-BERD/MTS Instruments (May 2021 release)

VIAVI have just released updated software for the SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2 and -4000 V2 platforms. These latest software versions include test options and feature enhancements to enable network tests at new speeds and with new capabilities that make testing faster and more efficient. The latest software release includes major usability enhancements, these are the main new functional additions:

Fiber test applications on SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2, -4000 V2 and -5800

  • OTDR 2.0 – A complete update to the look, feel, operation and performance of our OTDR and related fiber optic test applications. The user experience has been redesigned to improve the usability by reducing complexity and adopting modern smart device gestures/techniques for increased control to get techs of any skill level up-and-running in no time while reducing test and reporting times

Bi-directional fiber certification for T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2 and -4000 V2

  • Enhanced TestPRO/FiberComplete capabilities for 4100B OTDR module
    • Industries fastest two wavelength bi-directional IL/ORL & length measurement plus instant continuity check reduces test time (3.5s typical on simplex fiber)
    • High speed instrument-to-instrument communication via test port and fiber under test
      • No additional communications media required (WiFi connection, Smartphone tethering, USB, etc.)
      • Eliminate test configuration errors and reduce instrument setup time, data exchange
      • Remove unnecessary file transfer, automatically retrieve results from remote/far-end

VIAVI have just released updated software for the SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000 and -4000 V2. These latest software versions include test options and feature enhancements to enable network tests at new speeds and with new capabilities that make testing faster and more efficient. The releases include a number of usability enhancements, these are the main new functional additions:

DWDM OTDR module for T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2, -4000 V2, -5800, -6000A V2, 8000 V2, CellAdvisor 5G and OneAdvisor-800 platforms

  • Wavescan (patented)
    • Wavescan has been enhanced and is now able to auto-detect all channels that can pass through a single DWDM filter port and automatically sequence an OTDR test for each one. Identified channels are also saved into a dedicated channel list which can be used to test individual channels on demand.

OTDR module for SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2 and -4000 V2

  • PON Certification
    • For PON based on unbalanced splitter architectures there is enhanced support for cascades of more than 8 splitters with the addition of 93/3 split ratio identification with related pass/fail criteria.
    • For standard/classic PON we can now support measurement of 1×128 splitter ratio with SmartOTDR B version
    • Enhanced event notes/comments associated to OTDR events (Splices, connectors…) providing greater detail for an event and suggesting potential root cause of any test fails
  • Point to Point Certification
    • The standard SmartAcq function is a fully automated acquisition process which uses different width of pulses, to maximize the detection of all the network elements. The multiple traces coming from the different acquisition form a single graph and table of events, recombining the most relevant sections of each pulse per wavelength. Included on modules produced since Jan 6th 2020 and calibrated after Sept 1st 2020

StrataSync Test Process Automation Suite for SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2, and -4000 V2

  • Job Manager
    • Job Manager now includes management of connector inspection tasks with P5000i or FiberChek Probe
  • Mobile Tech app
    • Now includes new firmware notification for the connected instrument and provides the ability to start upgrading an instrument directly via StrataSync
    • Supports electronic signature inclusion on job reports
    • Addition of images and GPS data to results

These latest software versions include test options and feature enhancements to enable network tests at new speeds and with new capabilities that make testing faster and more efficient.   • Wavescan®
    • Automatically identify the operational channel/wavelength of a MUX/DeMUX port and complete an OTDR test for the link. Ideal for checks/certification prior to link turn-up and troubleshooting situations where a port is faulty or labelling is incorrect, unreadable or missing. Eliminates guesses about port wavelength and knock on effect of installing the wrong SFP or configuring an SFP incorrectly and the impact to link turn-up time.

DWDM and CWDM OTDR modules for T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2, -4000 V2, -5800, -6000A V2, 8000 V2, CellAdvisor 5G and OneAdvisor-800 platforms

  • SFP protect
    • Ensures that an DWDM transceiver is not damaged by the OTDR testing process, ideal for checks/certification prior to link turn-up and troubleshooting applications where an SPF transceiver may still be connected at the far end of a link. Allows centralized test while eliminating the risk of accidental SFP damage, cost of replacement and turn-up/repair delays.

TestPRO for SmartOTDR and T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2

  • Bi-dir OTDR and Loopback test function
    • Allows bi-directional testing with a single OTDR from single location
    • Enables testing of two fibers at the same time using a loopback device

TestPRO & FiberComplete for T-BERD/MTS-4000 V2

  • Automatic bidirectional test for MPO/ribbon cable
