Updated Software for VIAVI SmartOTDR & T-BERD/MTS Instruments (Oct 2019 release)

VIAVI have just released updated software for the SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000, -4000 V2, -5800 V2, -6000A V2 and -8000 V2. These latest software versions include test options and feature enhancements to enable network tests at new speeds and with new capabilities that make testing faster and more efficient. The releases include a number of usability enhancements, these are the main new functional additions:

New base unit functionalities (all units)

  • Improved lock marker capability

New base unit functionalities (SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2, -4000 V2)

  • GPS receiver support (requires VIAVI GPS dongle) – allows GPS data to be included with test results validating exactly where a test was performed and driving tech/contractor test compliance

New base unit functionalities (T-BERD/MTS-4000 V2 only)

  • Job Manager function – improves the testing and reporting workflow while minimizing the chance of tests being omitted and driving tech/contractor compliance – allows the import of a predefined job list and associated testing tasks (e.g. inspection, OTDR, or continuity check) and bundling of all test results into a single job numbered folder with a one button click summary report generation and one button click upload to StrataSync

New base unit functionalities (T-BERD/MTS-6000A V2, -8000V2)

  • Support for the new C-band DWDM OTDR module – allowing techs to perform complete end-to-end link characterization and troubleshooting through the optical MUX/deMUX, plus testing new DWDM wavelength routes and pinpointing exact fault locations without disrupting traffic on active channels in DWDM and hybrid CWDM/DWDM networks.

New OTDR functionalities (all units)

  • Improved OTDR automatic measurement – on short distances found in access & wireless networks, as well as for PON configurations
  • Enhanced SmartTEST modes – quickly identify if the fiber link needs repair or rework in 10s with EXPRESS Mode and perform link commissioning for customer acceptance with CERTIFICATION Mode
  • FTTH-SLM Premium application support for un-balanced splitter – can automatically fully characterize PON that use unbalanced (or tapered) splitter elements so the same tool can test & certify existing centralized/distributed architectures and new un-balanced splitter ‘Tap’ architectures
  • FTTH-SLM Base application – cost effective OTDR application for basic PON architectures

New OTDR functionalities (T-BERD/MTS-2000 V2, -4000 V2)

  • OTDR loopback test function – allows bi-directional testing with a single OTDR from single location and enables testing of two fibers at the same time using a loopback device

New FiberComplete functionalities:

  • Full bi-dir OTDR management with the M2M communication – now includes exchange of launch and receive cable settings for distant unit minimizing setup time and the risk of errors that might result in poor results or extra site visits for re-test
